Now i cant sleep

Ok so asleep in bed with OH, 2 children asleep in own bedrooms (baby in with us). Me and OH are woken by the loudest noise almost mechanical sounding and as if its shaking for about 1 minute. When i say loud it was ear splitting loud. I run to check on the children and he runs downstairs (after some encouragement) i look out of the bedroom window at cars and out the other window down into the garden. He comes back up having checked doors and electrical appliances. My heart is beating so fast, we've been lying in bed trying to reimagine the noise and where it came from and how on earth it didnt wake the children! OH has just rolled over to go to sleep but i very much doubt ill be sleeping tonight. It honestly sounded like an earthquake. Now im terrified and trying to rationalise what it could have been!

Well, whatever it is was, you're all safe.

You know, deep down, that whatever it was will have a rational explanation. The facts are you heard a noise that frightened you, but just because it frightened you doesn't mean its harmful.

Even if it happens again, has anyone been hurt?

No, of course not.

We feel fear at the unknown because its a survival mechanism, and then we learn not to be afraid when we see no harm has been done.

Have a warm drink and settle yourself, you're all OK.

Something was loud, nothing is wrong, everyone is safe and well. Go to sleep.

I am normally a really rational person and i think your right the fact i dont know what caused it, is whats getting to me more than the noise! Ive been trying to work out what it could be, not sure if its because im on edge that ive not got any idea! I think the fact i dont know what it is im thinking, if i go back to sleep will go off again!

But your right no one is hurt and it was just a noise its just so annoying that i cant figure out what it was. Why is it all these things happen in the middle of the night!

Whereabouts are you? Just asking as there have been a few mild earthquakes in Scotland in the last week.

Bluebells. I was going to say that. And there was one in Yorkshire somewhere this last week.

I had this a few months back, i was walking in the woods with noise canceling headphones playing music and the sound was so loud I jumped out of my skin, it scared the living daylights out of me, I think it was low flying military aircraft,

Kids drive past our street on dirt bikes at night, it is the most awful sound and so loud but over really quickly as they wizz past. Maybe it was that?
