Does anyone know what this visual is called?

Sorry for the crap description, I struggle to describe this, so hopefully someone knows what it means. Want to know if anyone else experiences this, or if it might be down to my eyesight.

I call it “digital rain”. I only really notice it when indoors, but sometimes outside too. It’s like millions of minuscule shapes, all the same shape and size, that look like ///// and they’re falling down constantly in front of me, like rainfall, all in the same direction. When I notice it, I can’t get rid of it, no matter where I look, until I’m distracted by something else and “forget” that it’s there. When I was younger it used to look so real I used to hold my hand out to see if I could “feel” it hitting my hands. Sometimes I could tingling in the palm of my hand when I did so, but that was rarely. That did make me wonder whether it was a subset of a ki ball, I used to get those all the time, even before I knew it had a name. When I was a teenager, I could feel the tingle of a ball in my hand and sometimes lay on my back in bed and used to transfer it from one hand to another, and throw it up in the air and catch it.

It’s not visual snow syndrome as that looks more like dots whereas these are more like diagonal slashes like ///// and all fall in the same direction. Pretty prepared for people to tell me I’m odd and have no idea what I’m talking about, but I’m just wondering if anyone else experiences this or knows what I’m talking about, or has a name or can put me to a link to perhaps read more about it.

I get the false rain thing when I look through horizontal blinds. I'm never sure if it's my crap eyesight or some kind of optical illusion.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 26/10/2021 00:36

Any of these? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entoptic_phenomenon

SoniaFouler · 26/10/2021 00:52

@SpindelWhorl is yours only looking through through horizontal blinds, or at other times too?

@ClumpingBambooIsALie Having read that, it doesn’t sound like it. It’s not in my eyes, I can “see” it against objects, walls, etc…

It sounds like a migraine aura. I know some people get them without a headache.

PaulaTrilloe · 26/10/2021 00:58

What is a ki ball? Is it a form of energy like tai chi or reiki?

SoniaFouler · 26/10/2021 00:59

That’s interesting Marci. I’ve never had a migraine in my life and don’t really get many of the symptoms as described but I do get tingly feelings in my hands, feet and overall in my body a lot - in fact I made a completely different thread just now in AIBU sort of about the same thing…now I’m wondering if it’s anything serious Shock I’ll read up a bit more now and see if further descriptions fit

PaulaTrilloe · 26/10/2021 00:59

I also see "rain" when looking through horizontal blinds - clearly need to get out more!

SoniaFouler · 26/10/2021 01:02

@PaulaTrilloe to be honest I only called it that because I wanted to know what it was called a few years back and that’s what the results came back as. It does sound like a form of Reiki and energies and that you can practice it, but I’m not a spiritual person at all and not into anything like that. Mine just stemmed from childhood and I thought it was strange but just rolled with it (and entertained myself as a teen throwing around a ball of electricity when I couldn’t sleep) Confused

Ever taken hallucinogens?

SoniaFouler · 26/10/2021 01:17

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

Ever taken hallucinogens?
As an adult, yes, but this started in childhood and especially during my teenage years, and I never did any drugs or drank alcohol then. If anything, it’s lessened as an adult but I still get it sometimes. It’s not something I can force myself to visualise, it just happens and when it does, it’s hard to stop seeing it until I actively try and ignore it and then forget that its “there”. So odd…

It sounds like a retinal migraine also known as 'scintillating scotoma', caused by decreased bloodflow to the eye(s). If you can, keep a diary of when and where it happens and visit your optometrist (optician), who may be able to help.

FictionalCharacter · 26/10/2021 01:53

I get this, and it got worse about a year ago so I got checked out at the optician. They said my eyes were OK but didn’t know what this thing is. It’s faded again now so not so noticeable.

It’s nothing like a migraine aura or scintillating scotoma, which I do get and is very different. This affects my whole visual field and is exactly as you say, like falling rain. Quite mysterious!

@FictionalCharacter
@TracyBeakerSoYeah

Thank you both for sharing! After I posted this, I wondered if it would have fared better in another sub forum but the reason I chose this one was because - I don’t know whether either of you felt the same - it doesn’t feel like it’s something ‘wrong’ in my eyesight, more that I’m seeing something that’s always around us but we cannot see, but for some reason sometimes I can see it. That’s why I mentioned that I used to hold my hand out to see if I could feel it hitting the palms of my hands, it almost looked like I imagine some sort of energy to look like.

Get checked for diabetes and high blood pressure OP x

TiffanyIceberg · 29/10/2021 16:10

It's called visual snow syndrome.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 29/10/2021 22:59

I sometimes feel I’m looking at everything through a very finely textured net. Not like a veil but more of an extremely finely patterned granular view. It’s not blurry or anything and it’s not as bad as visual snow.
But there’s no such thing as a completely untextured surface to me. Basically I can always see a faint fine pattern over everything. It’s mostly barely detectable and I sometimes wonder if it’s more psychological but I’m never quite sure.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 03/12/2021 22:58

What you're seeing is the matrix

GrrrlPwr · 07/12/2021 22:23

2 possibilities.
1 is 'floaters' actually inside your eyeball. Tiny wee bits of your eye floating around that sometimes you can see against a clear background, like the sky.
2 is the 'chi' energy in the air

Seeing as you can feel energy between your hands it sounds like it could be that. Is it squiggly in the air?

You could tune into it, but be very careful. Maybe ask the universe to send you the right reiki person to help you. If that's what you want.

Leafblower14 · 30/01/2022 22:49

So you mean like the pixels that your eyes pick up? Almost like the pixels in a TV but through your eyes , like TV static , everything i see is made up of it, i don't know how else to describe it lol
