just wondering how far you go to guard against theft - freezemark, micro-chip, horsewatch sign at padlocked gate?

not that I am neurotic or anything, just interested

Gate to the lane is padlocked. I'm waiting fot the vet to do Flu-Tet vacs and you've just reminded me to ask about micro-chipping.

Think you should just do everything you can to keep them safe. Doesnt bear thinking about does it really

am not bad thanks have missed emailing, think I subconsciously avoid it in case there is nothing but all work-related stuff in there

had some bleaker moments recently when thought about putting Barney on loan to fund Joey's schooling, then inevitable resentment started growing - but these were just passing thoughts really, although do feel bad that I don't love or like him nearly as much as Barney at the moment

how are you and your lot? hope your mum is still ok

Ahh don't feel bad feeling that way about Joey. I think it's really hard sometimes when you are working your socks off to keep them in hay/food, etc., love them to bits, then they turn round and try to kill you so to speak. It's not great is it. You'll get there. Eventually........ Are you still riding Joey as well?

mitchy - good to have you back - didn't like the new name. I soooo know what you mean when you just feel that the whole thing is heartache and stress and actually you should have stuck to guinea pigs. I often still feel overwhelmed with the responsibility of being a horse owner and mine is on full livery. Remeber you bought joey to giv ehim some stability and maybe like a foster child who now feels secure enough he is testing his boundries. BTW perdy happy in new home and Noddy nolonger to be referred to as Nutty Noddy as he becomes more and more dopey everyday ...i love him finally

Mitchy i'm not sure what i've missed but it sounds like things have been hard

We were contemplating sending one of our horses back, but now a friend is riding him and we are moving yards, things are looking a lot brighter.

As for security, one of ours is freezemarked and one is microchipped. Both done before i had them.

As for tack security, we are thinking of getting some of these for when we move.

Have been getting a little stressed atm, because where we are now, my 2 are the only horses there and the owners don't bother shutting the gate anymore. Makes me every day i go there and the gate is open yet again and no one is there.

Mitchy don't feel bad, of course you don't love him as much yet, it takes a long time. I used to look at my old pony and think I would burst I loved him so much, I don't get that with dhorse yet, fond as I am of him (and as handsome as he is ). Also, If I have a horsey dream it is always old pony even though I lost him 4 years ago. I've never once dreamed about dhorse.

You've taken Joey on at a difficult time of year when there is nothing but mud and expense, plus he is an awkward little devil! Wait until the summer, you will feel different I'm sure.

Security-wise we have combination locks on the main gate and little gate next to it, plus the communal feed room. Our hay store and trailer (old one for storing rugs etc, it will never move without falling to bits!) have padlocks on. Two big boys are microchipped and we do plan on getting them freeze-marked too well as a visible deterrent, just as soon as we can make up our minds whether to go for the horseshoe mark or 4 digit thingy! Shetland is already freeze-marked.

There's nowhere secure enough to risk leaving tack so it goes home with us, which is actually a right pain.

Pixel - have you looked at my link above? Where we are moving to, they take their tack home but it is not going to be possible for us so this is quite a good option we thought.

Alice, yes I've seen those before thanks they look good. Only trouble is we don't have a good place to fix one. We have a corrugated tin shed as a feed room which is surprisingly pretty nice inside but you can't really fix things to the walls. Or we have an old trailer that has been fixed up to be more like a glorified shed, and we can only use the tiny groom's door to get in and out since the farmer stupidly put some fencing across where the ramp goes down! (trailer has sunk on axles, can't be moved before you state the obvious ) Besides, any time I've left anything leather in there it's gone mouldy very quickly, we have to keep the rugs in plastic bins to protect them.

Lots of use of the word 'fix' there for some reason!
