My mum always plants a tree for any of her animals that have died. Both her horses had apple trees planted for them.

I managed to find my sister a variety of rose bush that had her pony's name. There are thousands so fairly easy to find something that fits even if it's only 'remembrance'. She put the name plaque from his stable door in the ground next to it.

Just don't do what my friend did when I lost my old boy. She got me this absolutely enormous stuffed horse. He was lovely and I named him Orbit after the horse in the house, but our place is really small and after about 6 months of stepping over him he had to go and live in the garage!

One of my friends painted a beautiful picture of my horse from some photographs. It was an amazing and completely unexpected surprise. If you do have a photo of her horse (or could ask her h/or somebody else for?) that might be nice. It did make me cry when I got it through the post but it was SO thoughtful and I really, really treasure it. She is not remotely interested in horses so it meant an awful lot to me on loads of levels.

for your friend

photobox.com make some nice things using photos, a mug is quite cheap

I like the idea of planting something, especially something that bears fruit or a physically comforting, warm fluffy thing of some sort

argh have made self cry imagining it

You could get a "mothering" bracelet? usually you have the name of your children on them but why not her horse?
