Am spitting mad. The girl who HAD a half livery on my 20 yo TB...

...took her out and galloped her across the field behind my house. I AM SO ANGRY. She knew she wasn't allowed to ride her out, she knew that I was trying to arrange that we could ride out together so that she could get to know my beautiful mare's little ways and she IGNORED me and rode her out with a friend and then decided to GALLOP her across a field SIDE by SIDE. Very sensible on an ex-race horse who you've only been riding for four months?? I saw them disappering over the horizon out of control - my heart was in my mouth.

WWYD. Sack her? End the livery? I am hopping mad. She could have been killed!

BTW she is 15 years old.

Tell her parents and her your feelings and that she has to prove her worth. Also tell them this is not a money issue, but a health and saftey issue

I think that is the way I will have to go. I have already given her a piece of my mind (what a strange expression) and have taken the tack room key off her until further notice. Her mother is being v. understanding and, listening between the lines, I think she's pleased someone has taken her over-confident 15 yo DD to task.

It's 50:50 at the moment as to whether I ever let her back in the saddle since when I saw them disappearing out of sight at a trillion kilometres an hour I thought I was going to puke... I had visions of calling her mother to tell her that her daughter was in hospital....

I think you have to go back to the beginning and she has to do everything exactly as you ask and if she ever disregards your intentions again she's out and if you feel she isn't listening she's out. In her favour I suppose she must have a real enthusiasm for the sport and she didn't fall off did she? So it sounds like there is material to work with - but she's on her last chance alright.

Is the horse ok?

The horse is fine and they do get on really well - one of those combinations that seems to work.

The problem is that I have struggled to find the right kind of rider for my TB since she is a wee bit special, has a weight limit on her of 64 kilos and over here you don't get many TBs so people are not used to them and they have a bad rep.

If I do decide to let her ride again I will have written rules provided to her parents as well and more supervision. Argh, but when can I supervise? I have 2 DCs, a job and a MIL who needs looking after.

Around by us the ground is really firm and we would be horrifed if the lady who helps exercise my horse went for a gallop. She just rung me to say that she was riding tomorrow and we've agreed that she can't even canter him until we get significant rain.

If you like this girl sharing your horse then don't cut off your nose to spit her. However if you are happy to keep your mare by yourself or have others interested then I'd invoke a ban - at least until she is more responsible.

If you are not happy with the way someone else is riding your horse then it really doesn't matter whether your concerns are within the realms of reasonable or not. It's only your opinion that matters.

I tried a sharer this summer. The first week I was on holiday I got THREE "emergency" phonecalls... my heart went to my mouth and I thought my poor nag had keeled over - obviously it was bugger all. Got home and got rid.

I was just thinking, like Butkin, the ground is too hard to canter on never mind gallop. The fields and tracks are like concrete, but maybe you've had rain?

Glad everyone is ok though, hope you sort things out with the girl.

Fortunately the ground is not too hard so there appears to be no damage to my mare. Looking back I fear that I have over reacted but I was terrified. I thought I'd be calling her mother to tell her that her daughter had broken leg / arm etc.

I've received a long weepy text from the girl's friend who claims it was all her fault as she talked her into it blah blah blah.

I might try and patch it up and now I've put the fear of God into her maybe she'll follow my rules? And clean my tack too....

WTF? That is ridiculous. I was riding other people's horses at that age (and exercising a 6 year old ex racer) and would never ever have gone against the instructions of the owners. I am shocked!

She needs to do some serious grovelling and then prove her worth to you, to be given a chance again.

I can imagine my fear if someone took my TB out and galloped him - you must have been terrified.

Serious grovelling has been done. There have been storms of tears (hers and the friend who persuaded her to go against my wishes) and a high level summit meeting will be held on Saturday with all parties.

I'm holding out for tack cleaning of both of my mares....
