Ideas for economical pony club games/handy pony equipment

DS (15) is obsessed with horses and all he ever wants for Christmas and birthdays is horsey stuff. There are only so many saddle clothes anyone needs! He is autistic and has a Learning disability, can be a little uncoordinated. Any ideas for pony club games/handy pony equipment that isn’t as costly as those I’ve found online, just to mess around with at home. Thanks

Sorry if I've misunderstood but is it to be done without a pony? If so dog agility equipment might fit the bill

If it is with a pony, gardening canes for weaving poles, buckets from DIY stores can be used for all sorts, sacks for sack race practice, traffic cones are fairly cheap,

CountryCob · 25/11/2024 09:18

Yes traffic cones with poles such as broom handles in and cups on top to swap between the cones, most of my traffic cones have been found in hedges so also cleaning up the countryside!

Just to add although I am sure you would realise, its plastic cups - I use camping beakers and mugs

Aww thank you for the ideas @CountryCob @lastqueenofscotlandagain ☺️ Just to clarify, yes it is on a pony.

How about horse agility? Membership/courses/certificates from International horse agility

There's lots of books & equipment that can be purchased on the website but mostly gives ideas - courses can be improvised from things you already have.

Tends to be more diverse people doing it so more boys, neurodiverse etc

Thanks so much @Serencwtch that’s brilliant 👍 Perfect for ds, will just have to see how agile his tank of a highland can be 😀

Oh I have a highland youngster and find him very agile when motivated, usually by food....

We use those round football markers a lot for games, they tend to survive being ridden over quite well.

This site https://www.ponymateriels.com/fr/6-materiel-pony-games sells all the equipment for the 'proper' pony games, but if you look at the stuff a lot of it you could get more cheaply or find in a non-horsey shop.

Most of the games you'd play with that stuff can be done alone or in teams and I can testify are really great fun.

Lots of the le trec games might work for them, I had a couple of goes and it's really fun. Most of the equipment wasn't horse specific, just repurposed so doesn't have equestrian price tags. All the info is on their website. You can do the games mounted or unmounted and it really helps with horsemanship. My favourite bit was having to pick up a flag which was attached to a road cone by a string. You had to ride to the cone, pick up the flag, ride round the cone (without dragging it across the arena) and put the flag back into the top of the cone. More experienced people did it (and a row of other tasks) against the clock. I was in awe of them. I thought I was a halfway decent rider but it was so hard (and so funny). Pony and I definitely earned our dinners Grin
