Pony help!

So we’ve just bought a young pony. I’ve only ever been around/helped/ridden older horses and riding school ponies. He’s a relatively quiet pony for his age, but only 5 and pretty green. He’s got good stable manners and great in the school. But to lead to the field and back, he’s super eager, wants to race back. I stop him, circle him, make him stand, but as soon as I walk him on again he pulls forward again.

Any tips? We’ve been doing ground work in the school and he’s great. He’s just so excited moving stable to field, and vice versa.

Thank you all! I will attempt to add a pic later (not the most tech savvy person ever!). Not ignoring your incredibly helpful comments and suggestions, they are massively appreciated, Life is just Very busy right now (and probably forever really, I don’t expect to ever have any spare time or money from here on in in fact! 😁)

@EverestMilton yes that makes me a feel a lot better, thank you for sharing! And thank you for the tips, I will have a go at all of that. He’s getting better everyday, tries it on a little bit, still pulls sometimes when I first go to lead him, but back him up once and then he’s fine. He only tries it in a cheeky young pony ‘what can I get away with’ way, never anything nasty, and as soon as he clocks on that it’s not happening, he’s fine. He’s defo unhappy about being on his own—so trying to make sure he’s never in on his own, as gets a bit anxious if his friends are all out, nothing major, and he’s still settling in. He’s fine as soon as he’s in the school. Just ask likes to have his stables pals nearby when he’s in that area. He’s not especially brilliant with tacking up or feet, but getting better already with lots of praise!

Just re-reading all comments, whilst cooking, sorry not to reply to everyone individually, please don’t think I’m not grateful, have picked up SO many ideas and tips. The manners book someone recommend has just shipped, thank you for that! The control headcollar has also shipped, that’s my backup for if I ever am in a situation where I might need it (eg he’s last one in) but he’s walking so nicely now, I hope not to need it!
