Yearling suddenly won't pick his feet up!

Hints, tips and tricks needed please.

My 15 month old colt has suddenly developed an aversion to picking up his feet (especially the back ones!) Up until recently he was fine (apart from the usual baby horse wobbles/unbalance) Now he has the horrors every time I attempt to go near them.

The farrier had to abandon an attempt to trim him a few days ago as he was so bad! He hasn't had a bad experience as I rent a private field and nobody handles him except me. His feet are desperate for a trim and I honestly don't know what to do. Help!

Is there any lameness?

@MacarenaMacarena Totally sound as far as I can tell. He's his usual laid back happy self apart from this sudden issue. It's probably just an age thing but it's a pain in the arse!

He might either have foot or back pain… you could try getting a thick carpet (piece of) to stand on to see if he’s more comfortable; he might have overgrown bar digging into his frog or a flare pulling, or his digital cushion might not be strong. He could have pulled something in the field that’s not making him lame but still hurts when you ask him to stand on 3 legs… it’s more likely there is an issue than he’s ‘being awkward’. In my experience horses are ‘awkward’ for a reason
