Can you check horse's blood sugars between vets visits?

This may sound a bit random, but is it possible to check a horse's blood sugar levels between vet visits? This is in the context of the horse having equine metabolic syndrome... I was thinking of using a blood sugar meter you can buy over the counter at pharmacies and trying to get a sample from a ear or somewhere like you can with cats & dogs? Is it a totally insane idea or would it work?? Many tia for any ideas!
