Hi all, we've just started looking after a pony who's about 25. Has anyone got any recommendations for equine insurance companies? We've looked at a few companies but not really sure what's best

I know Petplan do veteran insurance. My mare is 19 so I moved to PP last year.

I've just had the renewal through with a £60 increase even though I haven't changed anything or made any claims Hmm

I have veteran insurance with KBIS but it only covers accidents unfortunately. It's almost impossible to find veteran cover that will insure for illness. I umm-ed and ah-ed about even bothering, but sod's law the old bugger would stick his leg through a fence or something and require £££££ worth of treatment!

As said by a PP veteran insurance covers very little. You are probably better of sticking some cash in a savings account and getting something like BHS Gold membership for public liability cover. Some companies will give good cover for older equines but you usually have to have taken out the policy in their teens.

I couldn't find anything other than accident for mine once she got to 20. I still have that and public liability though in case she gets out on the road or anything. I've got enough in savings to make any treatment/end of life decisions though.

@Esmeralda1988 yeah we did wonder why they were only showing injury and not illness

Thanks all. Sorry I didn't have time to read fully and reply earlier.

Petplan seem to be reasonably priced and we're with them for our other pets so will consider them.

We have found some places that cover illness but it comes at quite a cost.

I think we'll have a good think about it. Putting money aside as suggested might be a good idea to cover the illness side. We will hopefully be sharing her half and half with another family so at least any bills will be halved

We have NFU Veteran insurance, covers accidents only for vet costs but good Liability. Expensive, but a really good and easy company to deal with.
