Getting a horse to eat antibiotics!

Blooming DH on AB's ...
Normally a greedy cow, she now won't touch her feed!
It's only 3days worth but HOW do you get them to eat up?

In my experience, you don't! Never yet had a horse (even a greedy cow) who would touch them in feed. Always ended up syringing them in.

Some people swear by a jam sandwich or a hollowed out apple. But every trick I've tried ends up with them being spat out. A syringe is your friend!

as above. Oral syringe. no muss no fuss.

Bufferingkisses · 15/01/2020 17:58

Syringe or mix with molasses ime.

RumbleDoll · 15/01/2020 19:17

Syringe every time.
Had a mini shettie with EMS on Metformin, no matter how we disguised it was the only way to make sure he took it.

Booboostwo · 15/01/2020 20:36

Syringe I am afraid. Last time I had to syringe them twice a day for ten days and it was a nightmare. Ended up wearing a lot of the medicine (tall horse, spitting contents of syringe over my head from a great height).

Jam butters might work the first time but not the second.
Butty number 2 becomes a big sticky mess and there’s no going back and syringing it once it’s mixed with crumby jam.

It's the only time when I buy molasess coated pasture mix, it's the only thing that hides antibiotics!

OldSpeclkledHen · 16/01/2020 10:51

Well ... camomile tea worked ... for last night only!

Will obtain a syringe today from somewhere! Thanks all!

Mine will literally eat anything if it is mixed with allen and page Fast Fibre.

I even put wormer in it!

Trewser · 16/01/2020 10:53

Yes or buy a bag of molasses coated chaff!

Try your local ag feed place. I got a nifty metal one from mine. Kind of has a longish curved metal nozzle, great for dispensing 'in-and-back'.

Dampening feed with apple juice (Rather than water) worked for mine

maddy68 · 16/01/2020 15:29

Put it inside a mars bar. It works

Ariela · 16/01/2020 15:35

Beware of syringe avoidance, get 2 syringes if you can. I found it easiest to do a syringe of orange juice, refill that then give a syringe of antibiotics then orange straight after again..
