Hi all,
I'm not associated with this business at all but I have a copy of this book and it is BRILLIANT. Horses Hate Surprise Parties is based on the work of Dr Andrew McLean; he's an Aussie horse behaviourist I've been a fan of for years. But I always found his books to be very inaccessible and academic. Well, one of his students (who is also a novelist and writes beautifully) has written this new book based on McLean's work for ages 12+ but is brilliant for adults too. I can't tell you how practical, sensible and useful it is. There is a big section on how horses learn, and mythbusting around horse training techniques, then a really easy to follow groundwork section which leads easily into the related under-saddle exercises. As an instructor I have found it invaluable and just wanted to share my excitement. :)
Andrew McLean is an international expert, he is lobbying the FEI to change the way dressage is judged to better reflect the way horses learn. He is also in demand as a clinician all over the world and I'm sure Portland Jones will soon be as well.
