What do your teen girls wear for mucking out/riding/general yard chores in freezing/windy/ice cold/wet/muddy conditions?

I am particularly interested in jacket recommendations please. Needs to be flexible enough for mucking out and riding, but warm enough when not quite so active. Plus fairly indestructible/washable but not £££££££££.

For the rest, are thermals/tights under jods ok with extra pair of socks?

Any ideas for muck boots etc?

DD, 13 yrs, tall, string bean, always catching colds. Want her to be prepared this year. Location: usually windy and icy.

I used to wear one of those double layer jackets - the kind that are a fleece and a windbreaker/waterproof that zip together to make one coat, but that you can also wear separately. Mine was from North Face but Mountain Warehouse does similar ones for much cheaper. Under that I used to wear layers as it's really easy to overheat when you are riding. So several thin jumpers instead of a thick one or big sweatshirt. And running scarves are great as they have no hanging bits to get caught in anything.

Harry Hall stuff has always been okay for mine, although the older more serious rider has just purchased two Barbour coats!
Harry Hall jackets look smart though and I've washed them and re-waterproofed them myself.
Thicker jodphurs in winter with tights and decent riding socks. When they were younger I always bought them Mudruckers or equivalent as they were really warm. We are very rural up north and they did the job.
Decent gloves make a difference too! OP I feel cold now I hate the cold in winter

DD used to have a fabulous Harry Hall riding jacket when she was smaller, it washed beautifully despite dd having landed in muddy puddles at various times, but I didn't seen anything in their range I liked this year.

Looks not a priority but this being a teen and everything... and yes a layered coat make sense!

DD did mention NorthFace herself but I gulped at the price rather. V. interested to note your dh's view that MH is just as good therefore!

Original muck boots. Neoprene is the way to go with winter boots. I love my waterproof chaps as I don't get cold wet soggy thighs riding in rain. My best winter coat by far is my Musto but my Shires one is also pretty good. Then yes, layers.

And gloves in scores! If they are wet they are cold.

Long johns - only October and I already have mine on😀

DH doesn't ride, but he walks absolutely everywhere in all weathers and says the coat's been brilliant.

Oh and my boots were alpine yard boots - I think Harry Hall or Aigle - one of the two. They were fab! (I was a teen in a colder country than the uk)

Not sure about jackets but try tkmaxx as they often have good ones in - I got a musto blouson one for £30.
In regards to legwear - primark fleece lined leggings. The really thick ones - plush lined I think they might be called. I wear them under my jods and they are so cosy.
And another vote for muck boots. I live in mine and they never let me down.

Neoprene with a riding sole are perfect for winter.

I had a good surf around last night and found quite of few of the items everyone has mentioned, some of which are reduced in price.

This site here seems good and they deliver internationally. (No I don't work for them!)

Another vote for Muck Boots! They are fab! No need for thick socks even when it snows, they are so toasty and comfy :) I also hack in mine in the winter, but they would be a bit clunky for schooling :)

I layer. I spent a fortune several years ago on an ariat jacket, but it's way to warm to ride in.......
So I have a Musto waterproof and wind proof jacket which depending on temp layer various things - I am a huge fan of icebreaker as it breaths - but it isn't cheap.
I also have down vests - I get those from uniclo - just because they are thin, but very warm and cheap compared to a name brand.
For my kids - who are younger than your daughter , (my sons a big 11) , I use icebreaker, uniclo fleeces, and uncle down jackets and down vests , which they can layer up. I also keep an eye on the local outdoor store - got my son a fab woman's small down jacket (in boy friendly colours). For rainproof coats - I find the regatta brand short raincoats great - I buy them big enough that they can put a fleece and down vest underneath.
For feet - in winter I buy them woof wear yard boots , I get them the long ones., of course they also have wellies boots, but the woof wear are great in the snow, wet, cold etc.
We spend slot of time outside - horses, and dog walking and I figure that if they are warm they will never mind!

Oh gloves ! I also splash out on the roekle polartec gloves- I think they are the Warwick- they hug the hand so great for riding ..... don't add bulk but keep your hands toasty warm and wash and dry really easily

Incidentally, we are thinking along the same lines! My strategy =warm clothing = more time outdoors = less screen time! That's the theory anyway!

It is actually a really good strategy - our kids screen time is severely limited- which is fab!
Oh another brand to look at is noble outfitters -I have a pair of there riding tights and I love them - I am planning on trying there softshell ones over winter.....but maybe abit costly for a growing girl!

Just liking the concept of your DD mucking out in all weathers. Wonder where we're going wrong with ours !!! (she's happier to be plaiting up..)

Ah Butkin DD v v keen atm because (if all goes well) we will moving from riding school situation to horse ownership by end of year (if we can find something suitable - purchase of last 3 serious contenders all fell through (last one post vet's inspection). She is v v motivated at the moment because it is something she has been working towards for six years (and she is currently not doing all the work!!). Don't want to pre-judge but we'll see how her commitment holds up on early, icy, weekend mornings once the novelty has worn off!!

Don't forget a decent woolly / fur hat!
