Show jacket question

Hi, I wonder if someone can please help me and give some advice on show jacket sizs for my dd. I am a complete novice and am slightly confused. She may have her first show on Sunday, late notice, I know, and I don't have any jacket or jodhpurs. I have had a look on eBay and her chest size is 29/30" ish. Does she need to get a bigger size to fit her body protector under her jacket? thank you.

Yes. Show jackets are measured to fit like any other jacket so if you want her body protector underneath you'll need to go bigger. However, lots of kids wear body protectors over the top of jackets. What type of class is she doing?

A few jumping rounds. Thank you for that.

Show jumping jackets (as opposed to showing jackets) tend to be black and snug fitting. She'd wear her BP over the top.

If she was doing working hunter (ie rustic jumps followed by an individual show) she'd wear a tweed jacket. Again BP over the top.

Ok Butkin. Thank you for that. Do they HAVE to wear them under the BP or it is by choice?

Assumpta, I don't know the level you're jumping at but it is normal practise to always wear a jacket (usually black for show jumping but could be blue) and you'd then put the BP over the top.

It would be strange to buy a huge jacket just to accommodate a BP underneath because then it may not fit in the arms etc.

If you were doing WHP then you'd wear a tweed jacket, shirt and tie with BP over the top.

If doing eventing you'd wear the BP over a rugby style jersey.

Thank you. Just starting level. I will check out eBay.

My sons instructor, who is also a show judge and pony club instructor, says that body protectors go under the jacket!

I can't find an exact ruling on Pony Club British Showjumping or BHS sites. I don't really follow junior show jumping. We are show people and working hunter pony kids tend to wear their ones over their normal tweed jackets. This is probably because they use the same jackets - without BPs - for their flat classes.

I think you should go with whatever you think best for your child and take advice from your local tack shop and speak to the competition organisers...
