Thrush...

My girl has persistant thrush in her hoofs. I have tried stockholme tar, but it hasnt seemed to have helped.

can anyone recommend anything else?

Yep, red horse products. It's fab and if you look it up on Horse and Hound forum, its recommended over and over.

Get the farrier to clean the foot properly and then flush with hydrogen peroxide from the chemist. I used a syringe and a toothbrush. Leave the horse to stand somewhere dry for a bit afterwards. Should clear fairly quickly.

Try and identify the cause though - make sure your bed (if you have one) is kept very clean and as ammonia free as possible. Regular trimming of the feet helps too

Right, you've got lots of options here and you pick and choose depending on your budget.

  1. Tea tree oil, let it run along the grooves of the frog. It's a natural anti-septic and anti-fungal.
  2. Clorox (?) foot baths. You can get it from the chemist.
  3. Get a hoof-trimming paring knife an clean up the frog and make sure there are absolutely NO "flappy bits" for these nasties to lurk in. Get someone to show you how and help you out. You will never take away dangerous amounts because your own fear will stop you! Wink
  4. Stop stabling and let the horse live out and poo-pick religiously!
  5. Kevin Bacon (not just a movie star!) hoof products.
  6. Because thrush is all the unhealthy stuff you can actually treat it by beating it with more unhealthy stuff a la danone yoghurts on bad gut bacteria. Get a jam jar and put some field mud in and top it up with water. Let it fester for a week or so until it reeks to high heaven, then brush it on daily getting the frog good and wet.

Stockholm tar is a shite pointless product which should remain in the 80's.

Oh... and all of that above - it goes without saying that if you go barefoot and get rid of those contracted frogs then you won't get this issue!

I've seen plenty of barefoot horses with thrush!

Just because there's no shoes doesn't always mean people clean and check their horses feet!

I do same fairydogmother with syringe does work use the weaker type of peroxide, then keep as clean as possible

she is bare footed, and lives out but has access to the stable when ever she wants - which is not very often, she prefers to stand in rain Hmm

I am too worried to do any DIY trimming of feet!

what ratio should the hydrogen peroxide be diluted with water? and what grade is recommened? 3%? 6%? more %?

her feet had not been looked after for a loooong time before i got her, not been trimmed for at least 6 months, and possible not picked for same amount of time.

i am hoping when i manage to clear this all up then she wont get it again!

It worked for me after a long period of box rest, a well cleaned out worming syringe would work with peroxide from the chemist try and get it as deep into the crack as you can and if you think she might be sensitive try to do it when someone is holding her for you for safety, not that it will necessarily hurt my horse doesn't react but some do, hopefully it is dry now in the field and you can really get to grips with it, might sound gross but do smell the hoof to see if it is going and when it has lay off the peroxide to avoid drying out, use every other day or max once a day, I agree re foot trimming would not be confident myself but farrier did pare away some of the frog when the time was right and it looked clean and was able to let me know what he thought of it so if you cannot get to the bottom of things then asking your farrier to have a look would be a good idea, hope it clears up!

yes, the smell is horrid! i thought she had stepped in dog poo at first!

she is due to see a farrier this week so i will have a chat with them. one of her frogs does look a little odd, sort of indented.

I wouldn't ever recommend anybody messed about with feet - that's a professionals job! A good trim up and some peroxide will def clear things up fairly quickly.

I use solution 4 feet once a month now on my girls feet as it has a long lasting disinfectant and its brilliant. Gives the appearance of hoof oil if you're going out too. She's barefoot behind and her feet are perfect
