Who the fuck dumps there horse in MY field

MagicLlama · 16/11/2012 20:26

So ive gone down to let my horses in tonight, and there is an extra fucking horse in my field. I know its not mine. I know it wasnt there at 7:30 this morning. I know its been put in because the lock is cut off. CUT off. Theve cut my padlock off to put an additional horse IN!! IN!!

It went crazy when I took mine in to the stables, so I had no choice. Hes now in a stable with a haynet.

Ive rang round locally and noone appears willing to claim him. Ive rang the police, and theve advised me to put un an abandonement notice telling whoever owns him they have 14 days to shift him, before he becomes mine, and apparently hes my legal responsibility in the meantime because hes on my land.

WTF do I do now?

...give him his chance ...*because he is a shetty

alwaysGOLD · 21/11/2012 10:52

Oo op im not far from you!, well done for taking him in, sounds like he will have a fabulous home with you - hope you get to keep him :)

LadyofWinterfell · 21/11/2012 11:05

I'm about an hour away OP, and would happily bring DD1 and DS for treat visits! I used to ride but have got out of practice, and DH thinks horses are 'nasty, pointy, bitey things' Hmm

hi again op

bear in mind what the vet said about people being on hols and notknowing theyve lost him - and i would call the police back and double double double check that they havent had an incident of a loose horse where your field is because i know that i have cut a lock off and put a loose horse in a field of other horses when i had no alternative - (im a police officer) and we get called to loose horses all the time and we often have no idea where they have come from.
i once had to put a little pony into a field of others, i had to get the bolt cutters and cut off the lock, it was a make do situation otherwise little pony would have been squished on a very busy road come 7am.....

so just check back with the police to see if any incident of a loose horse was reported.

i might pm you this so you dont miss it....

pantaloons · 21/11/2012 11:37

I'm also curious as to where in Stoke you are, I'm at Mow Cop. (outs self even totally!)

MagicLlama · 21/11/2012 12:06

Well today he is being a cowbag! Hes been all sharp and generally daft. What pick my feet up really why? What stand still to be groomed, no thanks id rather jog on the spot! Idiotic horse!

To be honest, i was thinking about extending the notice, just because im worried that since they arent answering the phone at all maybe they are away, and id hate to reregister him, and decide to keep him make a decision about whether or not to keep him, and then have to give him back Sad id almost rather give them longer, and then be sure ive done all that can be done!

Im still calling him horse at the moment because i still dont know his name. I should have asked what it was really which was foolish.

Yes ive got an evil shetland, and we will be stuck with her forever. Our other horse (13hh) and this horse are scared witless of her. She only has to stick her ears back and everyone moves! Which is funny, because before smaller shetland went out on loan, she was the bottom of the herd, and no trouble at all and all of a sudden shes turned into the worlds worse bossy mare!

Good on you for looking after him so well Smile

Was he abandoned naked or did he have a rug on out of interest? Just trying to gauge the mindset of the person who left him......

He sounds lovely and obviously used to being kept out of inclement weather Hmm, obviously quite pampered somewhere at sometime......

We have an ex racer at the yard who is lovely, kind and a super hack. If you keep him I am sure some of the racehorse rehoming charities will give you advice re schooling etc, thinking of these people

We also have an abandoned pony on our yard but due to her age (late 20's) there will only be one option for her but ATM yard owner looks after her and we liveries spoil her rotten (her owner died & no provision was made for herSad)

Hope it all works out.

Have you been told his stable name but the race yard?

frantic51 · 21/11/2012 12:12

Vicar, would you not have notified the owner of the field you put the pony in though? A police officer once knocked on our door to say that he had put a cow into our field as he didn't know who it belonged to and had found it on the road where it was likely to cause an accident. I told him that it wasn't, in fact our field, it belonged to the local, "big house", but was able to give him the name and address of the people who leased it at least so I presume he then went and informed them?

DreamySleepyNightySnoozySnooze · 21/11/2012 12:18

Oh gosh, I didn't mean give him away to any random who'll have him Saggy! I didn't word it well, sorry. I'm typing with one finger on my left hand, so tending to type as little as possible!
I meant ask around your knowledgeable horsy friends who you trust, and be honest about him. I agree, far too many horses are passed around. I've been offered loads and I always turn them down, much as I'd love to take them in, they always have far too many expensive problems which is why they're free. :(

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 21/11/2012 12:19

please have a Mumsnet horse and let us sponsor him. You could raffle of the name so that person gets to choose.

Thundercatsarego · 21/11/2012 12:21

I was just wondering exactly the same as frantic - surely of you're doing a good deed by putting a horse safely in a field you don't then just walk away and leave it without telling anyone? Or even going back to put a note on the gate?

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/11/2012 12:22

I would re register him asap after the 14 days personally. By doing this, you're claiming ownership, in case someone later comes looking for him. You can also apply for his passport to be replaced and reregistered in your name. This way, you are following proper legal procedures, you become his owner in the eyes of the law, and if he should one day disappear, you can claim him back. The longer you give, the longer the people who dumped him have to come and retrieve him. If he is just being fly grazed, then he will just go on being dumped.
If, at a later date, a real, heartbroken owner turns up, you still have the choice of giving him back, can explain your motives, and can ask to be reimbursed.

AnnaBegins · 21/11/2012 12:27

Ooh I'm only an hour away, will happily come and pet and groom him! I also have riding withdrawal, and I'm somewhat too heavy for my sister's 11hh Shetland (who is not evil, but his stablemate is!)

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/11/2012 12:27

Sorry, I'm coming across as very spikey today! Blush
I'm not trying to offend anybody, honest! Confused I'm just posting from my own experience and those of our much loved beasties!

SparkyTGD · 21/11/2012 12:32

Just read thread quickly but remembered this from Facebook about a lost/stolen horse.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/11/2012 12:40

I think you're very kind to take him in and feed him. He's had a really shit time by the sound of it and I suspect with the costs of winter feed and worming. It's heartbreaking that after all that he still trusts humans at all.

I know 16hh seems big but I used to ride a 17.1HH grey who was so lazy he was no trouble at all and you get used to the size, they dont seem so big after a while.

Maybe the other horse likes a bit of company if the shettie is indeed a furry tyrant.

foofooyeah · 21/11/2012 12:42

Have just read the whole thread.

Llama, you are obviously a very kind person to look after that horse. I hope if you are able (and want) to keep him that all works out ok.

WhoeverHeardOfAWormskinRug · 21/11/2012 13:04

There is a girl who is friends with someone on my Facebook who is missing a couple of horses (friend put out a status asking if anyone has seen/heard anything). A Bay and an Appaloosa. It's a long shot - as she is up in Co Durham, but I can PM you her name so you can message her?

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/11/2012 13:10

frantic - no - we had no details on our database as to who the field belonged to, at 4am my main concern was to get this horse of a busy main road before something came wanging around the corner and squished it.

i told control where id put it - but had no idea where the horse had come from, who it belonged to, or who the field belonged to. i had spent a good couple of hours trying to find out. I had even asked them to contact the RSPCA who couldnt help either.

i went back when i came back to work to check if he was there, and he wasnt so i assumed someone had claimed him.

everything id done was on the incident log so anyone phoning up could trace what id done.

thats why i just wondered if the same had happened here - its a possibility but ive pm;d the OP.

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/11/2012 13:12

btw - the house next to this field was being rented and they had no idea who was using it/renting it/ owned it. i did knock them out of bed.

there is only so much you can find out at 4am. main thing was the horse was off the road.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 21/11/2012 13:35

Been lurking too! Glad to see he's safe and fed at least. I hope owners do turn up from holiday because at least someone will have cared about him.

Out of date chips seem white common, a friend sold her childhood pony years ago and last year got a phonecall from a rescue who had found him abandoned. She was the last person on the chip though they manage to piece together that he'd been injured and passed around, she goes to visit and sponsors him now.

octanegirl · 21/11/2012 13:48

On the subject of the possible owners being on holiday and not knowing their horse was missing - I don't know any horse owners who would go on holiday and just leave the animal/s to fend for themselves with no supervision - so I think this scenario is pretty unlikely. Whoever was looking after their horses for them would notice and let them know if one went missing!

I had the Police once banging on my door at 1 am a few months ago, having found a loose horse on the main road - I took it in and the rightful owner turned up the next day - having called the Police. In that case the Police said if I hadn't woken up they'd have just plonked it in one of my fields, so it can and does happen.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/11/2012 13:55

Agree. If I'd gone away, I would leave my ponies in someone elses care. I would arrange for them to be checked over at least once a day. If they went missing, I would know in hours. Even if I didnt, Everyone of the neighbours has been chatted to in the past, and would know straight away if one was missing.

OscarPistoriusBitontheside · 21/11/2012 14:44

Magic he's a tb, they are bloody idiots. Grin we've had a few pass down the years and they are fab, but bloody idiots. Grin

I'd get him re-regulated ASAP and then keep him. No one would dump their horse if they were off in holidays, surely not!
