Does anyone know what size bit most 12:2 ponies would need. He is quite dinky and has quite a petite head. Cheers x

You will need to fit the bit to his individual mouth. Does he already have one on his bridle? If not, visit your local tack shop and explain that you aren't sure, and they will most probably let you buy one that looks ok, take it and try it and change it if it's wrong.
The bit should sit comfy in the mouth, with around 5mls spare on either side, it should not gape wider when you pull on the reins, if so, downgrade half an inch or so.

Our 13hh pony has a 4.5 inch bit if that helps. She has quite a big head.

Our 12.2 Welsh B has a 4.5 inch but in an ideal world would have a 41/4 inch (anyone knows where I can get one, please let me know!)

My 17.2hh takes a 13.5 cm - which is 5 1/4 I think - so as you can see - different horses = different mouths!

Our 15.2 cob takes a 5.5 inch so when the shetland needed a new bit I thought a 4.5 inch would be plenty big enough but it wouldn't even go in her mouth! She ended up with a 5 inch which was a surprise to me as she's never struck me as being particularly chunky about the head. The best thing is if you can borrow a similar bit to try on to get an idea before you go to the shop.

Thanks everyone. I have ordered a 3 3/4" , so will see how that is. He came with nothing, so we are getting everything new for him. If it's too small, I'll try a 4" one.
