anyone been?

last one was a few weeks ago, next is not til the Autumn after the foals have come of the forest.

Are you looking to buy or spectate? If you are after a new Forest pony.. buying direct from the breeder will give you more time to assess the animal, but at the sales the prices the last year at least have not been high.

DD and I would like a foal as a project. I'd rather buy from the forest where there is a risk of being sold for meat. I know some gorgeous forest Breds.

I was supposed to be going with my friend last year, but a sale fell through of one of her other ponies so she decided to keep him over the winter and couldn't afford keep for another. She's hoping to sell the pony soonish so hopefully we will be going this autumn. Might see you there!

(mind you, I have my doubts if I should go. I definitely won't be taking my credit card, dh would kill me).

im going to go down in August to check it out, how it works, what the ponies are like, them if it all seems ok, ill go back in september or october with DD and transport to bring something home. It would be exciting to meet another MNer! Have you ever done Fayre Oaks welsh pony sale? its in september. A great weekend away!

Or check out the nfed.co.uk site... Lots of forest foals advertised then if you like a particular stallion you can look for his off spring.

I went to a horse sale when I was a kid and found it quite upsetting so haven't been to one since. I'm hoping it will be different if I'm with someone who is actually coming home with a pony.
It's not definite that we are going yet, depends if the other pony gets sold. My friend is being a bit half-hearted about it atm as she very fond of him, but she only took him on originally as he was unrideable and though she's got him going lovely he's too small for her really. She's got to be very fussy about the home he gets, he is very talented (and pretty, dapple grey New Forest!) but needs to be handled right or he will be back to his old ways.
Still, if we do end up going, we'll have to arrange a secret signal. As long as the auctioneer doesn't think we're bidding.

They have put a lot of effort into improving the quality of forest bred stock & limiting the numbers so the prices are now too high for the meat man & healthy ones suitable for riding are no longer going for meat.
My parents used to be commoners with forest run stock (farm now sold) but I still have foresters. Can't beat a Forester & love mine to bits but definitely do your research as they can be little shites arent always easy.

The recent sales have been online. First due to COVID, then a fire at the auction site & then strangles on the forest. They broke alot of records for prices at the online sales so they may well continue to have online auctions.
I would say you are better off doing your research and thinking about what you want then contacting the breeder/commoner directly or look on NFED in the young stock category.

Also if you are looking for a bargain don't overlook the plain looking bay/brown colts. Top prices go for fillies & sought after roans.
I bought a dark chestnut not quite bay colt in the 2017 sales for less than 100 guineas. He turned into a fantastic all rounder family pony. One of the best I've owned.

I don't know about USA but the breed has become very popular in Canada. Halestorm Branston pickle who ran the forest as a stallion several years was exported over there.
