As a teen I had one lesson and hated it so much that it has taken me 18 years (i am now 35) to start lessons again.

My dd is horse mad and it would be nice to be able to go out together for hacks.

I have have 3 lessons with a fantastic lady but I am so useless that I am still trying to learn how to do rising trot. The instuctor has the horse on a lead rope and the horse trots. She is gettimg me to do rising trot whislt resting my hands on my legs.

It is so hard!

How long will it take until "I get it"?

It's like riding a bike, really hard until one day it just 'happens' and you never forget. Smile

The trotting with your hands on your legs does sound a bit harsh on a beginner though, most people start off with a steadying hand on the front of the saddle until they've picked up the rhythm.

I didn't start riding seriously(not counting a few pony treks when a child) until I was about 28. After a few lessons I bought my first horse - wanting just to go hunting on him - and within 4 years I was riding at Horse of the Year show!

It can be done!
