Supply to Perm question

Hi all,

Could someone help me with this:

If you have been working as a supply in a school and then applied for a permanent position in the same school when did you tell the agency?

When applying or after the job offer was made?

Many thanks

As far as I understand, the school will know that giving you the job, will mean that in theory, they have to pay a fee to the agency, or they will have to negotiate with the agency. Do you know that you are very likely to get the job?

I would wait until a job is offered, then at that point say "I'd love the job thank you but will the agency allow me to join the school without the school having to pay a fee?"

This happened to me once, where I was on long term supply at a school, and they wanted me to sign a permanent contract. They didn't advertise. They told my agency at the time that they wanted to have me permanently, and told them that they couldn't afford to pay a fee, and would never use them again if they insisted on a transfer fee so to speak. Needless to say, no fee was demanded and I joined the school on a permanent contract. The school then continued to use the agency for future supply roles.

So wait until you are offered the job. The school will then have to deal with the agency themselves. I wouldn't tell them before you know, or they will start planning and interfering before you know if you got it.

This is down to the school. Not the member of staff. Do not tell the agency before hand.
