Move to FE

I am considering applying for a role in a FE college. I currently work in a school with a 6th form. I know the pay is less but it’s a very interesting job. I am confused about holiday- it’s 52 weeks a year with ‘generous holiday’. Anyone work in FE know what holiday would be? What happens in the summer? Do people WFH? Thanks

It varies but we get 42 days and can work from home in the holidays for some days. I would check at the interview. In the colleges I've worked at we have to be in from GCSE results day onwards. FE is a great sector to work in and much less stressful than schools.

Thanks so much- that’s really helpful

Similar to our place.

It's a bit grim if you're doing maths or English resits but otherwise much more chilled than secondary. Miss the better pay though, but not enough to go back

Holidays vary massively across colleges, our college is 44 for full time and I can accrue TOIL from parents evenings, open days, trips etc. but I occasionally look what else is out there jobs wise and some colleges get a lot less, some get a little more. We can usually work a day or two a week from home during the holidays at managers discretion, although some teams in our college teach from home one day a week, but it depends on the subject.

I do really enjoy teaching in FE, I wouldn’t go back to school teaching now, but it is very different. We go back the Monday before GCSE results, but the plus side is I’ve already been off for a week!
