Well that was a shitty week.

I’ve been teaching for 9 years and that has been one of the worse weeks to date.

We got the worse news about an ex student. Lot of friends still at the school. Full details aren’t known yet which makes everything worse.

Had a trip with year 8 which was fun, exhausting and exasperating in equal measures.

As a result I was knackered and had a bad headache and totally stuffed up a year 9 lessons. The boys were being rude with very poor behaviour but I should have been able to deescalate but I couldn’t get a grip on the lesson. It is a tricky class with lots of hot spots and I just completely failed to stop a fire breaking out.

Plus year 12 and 10 mocks and marking so I’ve been swamped with work.

All in a 4 day week! I should get some work done this weekend but I’m going to take both days off and lick my wounds.

That sounds awful.

All I can say is be really kind to yourself. Don’t let 1 bad lesson in a shitty week get you down. And it may not have been as bad as you think - you’re probably your own worst pernickety critic.

Losing a former pupil is an awful shock at the best of times and when you’ve had an exhausting week it’s even worse.

Take care

Thank you. I’m getting outside in nature. Going to have some nice food and at least 1 nap. Feel a bit bruised from that week.

Don't beat yourself up about one poor lesson. Remember how many were ok or good. I teach 5 groups of y8 and know that the same content requires slightly different approaches based on each group. Not last week, but the previous one I ended up sending out 2 annoying kids, mostly to stop me from letting rip at them. I never usually have any behaviour issues. The rest of the class breathed a sigh of relief and one nice kid asked if I was ok. My response was that I didn't want to expose them to some unbecoming language and their right to learn trumped the scrotes' right to remain in the room. Lots of smiles until I spoke to one afterwards who still cannot accept that he is ever wrong. He will be under my nose this week...

I'm so sorry you've had such an awful week 😞

We are often so attached to our students and care so much for them that awful news absolutely hits us 😥

That plus a trip in one week is more than enough for anyone.

Be kind to yourself this weekend and next week 💕

One of our pupils was hit and killed by a car in 2021! They were in Year 1. It was devastating for the whole community.

The driver was drunk. The class are now Y5. Our LA was really good and offered counselling to anyone who needed it.

It’s terrible when a child you’ve taught dies so my thoughts go out to you .
