What exactly does an Executive Headteacher of 2-3 large secondary schools do? How often do they go into school to meet the Head of School/SLT and how much do they have over the operations of the school?

I haven’t been an executive head (as I didn’t want it) - but I know someone who is currently and has been for about 2 years now. The job is only for experienced HTs - if you are not experienced or have a demanding home life then I wouldn’t even consider it.

To be successful in the role, you’ve got to have a good relationship with your Heads of School. That will make your life easier. The exec head and the HoS work in unison and do essentially what a HT would do but remotely ALTHOUGH the day to day responsibility of school management is of the Head of School.

In regard to visits; it would depend where they are needed but usually visit at least twice a week. If there is one particular school that is due an OFSTED inspection then the energies will be channeled there and the HoS would just report in.

Heads of School are just an alternative cheaper version of a Headteacher.
