Head changing SLT responsibilities

Is the Headteacher allowed to change the SLT responsibilities as they choose? For example, if I am employed as the AHT behaviour/DSL, can the HT tell me I’m going to be AHT curriculum next year.

Only your contract of employment can give you a clear answer.

You will need to check your contract but in general, yes. Contracts generally have a clause along the lines that you can be directed to undertake responsibilities ‘at the reasonable direction of the headteacher.’

Yes they can and as a HT myself since 2007, I very often swap around the responsibilities of my senior leadership team to best suit the needs of the school.

Yes, of course. Senior leaders need to experience a range of senior roles in order to prepare for potential headship. It is vital for headteachers to have the flexibility to have the most appropriate available teacher in each role and to be surrounded by deputies/assistants who are solid and dependable in their roles and who can cover for one another as well as the head as needed.
