Does your HR Manager sit on the SLT (reporting to the Headteacher), or do they not (reporting to the SBM)? What are the advantages & disadvantages to both?

How big is your school’s HR Team? Does your HR also manage cover?

Since we became part of an academy trust the structure changed where we have a Head of HR who is responsible for the entire HR function across all schools and they are on the management board of the trust and then 2 x HR Business Partners. These report into the Head of HR.

Previously, in my last school and this school I’m in now, they did have a HR Manager who reported into the HT and was part of the SLT. They worked in conjunction with the SBM.

The structure we have now I can absolutely see the reasoning to move towards that way to save costs etc - that said though they are not ‘exclusive’ to your school and you often need to book appointments for the HRBP to come in if you need assistance with investigations etc.

In regards to cover, the HR Manager used to manage this before but now we’ve become apart of an academy trust, there is a Resourcing Manager for the trust who manages recruitment and cover for all.
