Hi, I’ve just got a new job as a 1:1, not started yet. The only experience I have of this is through supply work where you’re not given as much responsibility. I really want to do a good job and make a good impression and build a good relationship with the child, any advice or tips please? I don’t want to be relying on the teacher too much or annoying her 🙈

I would recommend spending as much of the first week finding out what the child can do and what they struggle with, whether that's academically, emotionally, socially or physically. Then you know what to work on alongside what the class teacher directs you to.

The other key thing is not to smother the child; foster independence when you can. So show them what to do, then step away, keeping an eye on them but giving them time and space to be independent. Again, this is true for all areas, not just academic.

And listen to the child, whether it is through their voice, their behaviour, or through an advocate such as their parent. You can learn so much from becoming attuned to the child and their needs.
