If I had an interview and didn't hear back until the next day, can I assume that I am not the preferred candidate at this point? I'm totally fine about it either way!

It depends how many candidates they need to interview. I like to let candidates know within 24 hours but have taken up to 3 days previously.

Given the resignation deadline for a December 2024 departure is next week though, I’d be letting people know quick. Luckily I have just managed to fill all my vacancies for January 2025 starts and don’t expect anyone else to leave.

@good96 I was told I'd hear either early evening or first thing this morning. There was only three of us that interviewed.

Probably not successful on this occasion. You could follow up with it though and ask. No harm done if it’s taken over 2 days. But again at that point I’d assume the worst. Teaching jobs usually have same day feedback.
