Private School pay

Hola staffroom!

My private school has said it is freezing pay next academic year 'due to the imposition of VAT'.

My question is... it hasn't happened yet..?! We don't know whether it may take an academic year to implement/ whether they will stagger implementation etc.

Also the way to 'protect the parents' is to penalise the teachers. They are assuring parents we will absorb some of the cost.

It's a for-profit school and imo it's a bit grim.

I'm actively looking for a job but was hoping to work one more year here. We are already paid under the TPS. I'm happy for the VAT from a personal perspective and think they are weaponising it unnecessarily.

How do I say my thoughts to management- without saying it in that way? It's not the amounts etc that trouble me- just that they're blaming it on a bogeyman who hasn't appeared yet.

Yeah this is pretty gross. Freezing the pay of already very underpaid teachers so that much richer families can continue to benefit from private education is so wrong on so many levels. And yes - they are massively jumping the gun.

Yeah I think it's the final straw on what was a fairly fractured back already as it's extremely low job satisfaction along side the money aspect.

I just want to wave my 'it's not fair' to the management without sounding like I'm obsessed with money.

(FWIW we have a massively engorged leadership team recently doubled in size- money saving would be to send the new additions back to the classroom!)

I don’t think you need to fe worried about sounding like you’re all about the money. After all, they are!
I work in a private school and have had to take a pay cut because they can’t afford the TPS and another pay cut because of the VAT thing. Meanwhile, I have to walk to my classroom the long way due to a swimming pool and equestrian centre being built at the moment. It’s truly sickening that the rich benefit from the teachers sacrificing their own income to prop up their fancy lifestyles.
I will be leaving soon when a good job comes up but you’re not greedy for saying that the remuneration has become completely unsustainable for you and your family.

I work in a indie school where the pay is higher than state and we still have the TPS for current staff, but they are not offering it to new joiners from September.
sSince VAT is being imposed it is inevitable that salaries will not increase and will effectively lose value.
Blame Keir! The VAT imposition will directly impact our remuneration and obviously schools have to prepare for that now.
