MFL question

We have all been given our places for next academic year and I’m moving up to KS2 from EYFS. I’m mostly excited about the move but it’s a big change. My biggest worry is teaching languages. My TA in EYFS has a language degree, lived abroad and loves languages. She does not know yet where she’ll be in September. Would she be allowed to teach languages despite not being a teacher? I know there are higher TA levels but she’s not a HLTA but surely we could use her skill set to support language learning??

Sorry that should read teachers have been given their places for September. Support staff have not yet.

Does she want to move from EYFS to KS2, and do you feel comfortable asking someone on a TA salary to plan and deliver whole-class specialist teaching?

I know the idea of teaching languages is daunting but many teachers have no MFL qualifications beyond GCSE (and the younger ones may not have that) and there is support available. There should be a language hub covering your area where you can access training and resources.

Surely you have a whole KS2 policy on teaching languages? Btw, it's called 'Foreign Languages ' in the national curriculum at KS2, not Modern Foreign Languages, as we can also teach Latin and Ancient Greek. MFL is KS3+. As the pp said, it would seem unfair for a TA to do all the language teaching and planning without being on a teacher salary. What provision does the school currently have for languages? Scheme? Support? Which language do they teach? Join Languages in Primary schools (LiPS) on Facebook - a goldmine of helpful people. You will have to learn lots of new content with that move- science, maths, history topics- just put the language in the same headspace.
