Losing PPA for events?

Sorry, bad title!

I teach full time in a secondary school. We get 5 PPA per fortnight (it is 10% so correct amount).

However, numerous times, I and others are losing PPA for things like additional assemblies/extra sessions with forms. So, for instance, 1st day back, I lose my PPA P1 as we are in forms. No time given back for it.

Fair enough, in the grand scheme it isn't huge but it irks me that it's just done, as if totally normal, and never mentioned. Like all teachers we are mad busy all the time and losing PPA makes it harder. In a way, I am lucky as I get some management time as a HoD but it's only 2 additional periods a week, for a core subject.

Does anyone else find this? Just having a moan really 😂sorry!

As a HT, I’ve always given it back to staff if they lose something like this

Have you asked for the time back? Raise it with your union rep.

We had this problem at our school and honestly until it was raised SLT we’re unaware.

There are staff who don’t have tutor groups who will gain time so could cover these times.

Word of warning to you as a HOD if you get 2 non contact per week ie 4 per fortnight then 10% of 46 (presuming 5x1hr lessons so 50 - 4 n/c) = 4.6 per fortnight so they could argue you are receiving slightly too much PPA. Colleagues though without the management time are in a different situation.

It may also be worth quoting the STPCD makes clear that PPA time cannot be used for cover. Teachers cannot be directed to undertake any duty during their PPA time, other than in emergency situations. PPA time must be clearly shown in every teacher’s timetable and should not be moved or cancelled.
