References for job application question!

I'm hoping someone might be able to advise me..

I've recently returned to secondary teaching after a long maternity leave (5 years). I didn't apply for my current teaching job (I was volunteering in the school and was invited to cover a long term absence), so I didn't go through the official application process. I've been volunteering at the school for over a year, and joined the teaching team 6 months ago. The person on long term absence is returning soon, so I've started looking for jobs.

I am applying for a HoD role in another school. I have no idea who to use as my referees! Shall I ask my current HT to write a reference for me? I've only spoken to her twice! Or my HoD? My HoD knows me quite well, so that would make more sense?

Thanks for your help!

In my experience it's always been 2 referees. You'll have to put your HT down but if they don't know you well, they'll forward the email on to someone who does, so I wouldn't overthink it too much.

Thanks. That's very helpful. I'll put HT down.

One of your referees must be the current headteacher for safer recruitment purposes. You can put both the headteacher and your HOD.

Agree with the above. HoD and Headteacher.

The Head’s reference could be more of a factual one though to confirm dates of employment, job title etc.

Thank you! This is really helpful. I don't know why I've got into such a tizz about it! But I will follow your advice and put down my HT and HoD. Thanks everyone ☺️
