Stress/sick leave - can it fix things?

I’m totally burnt out by work, the culture and the demands of it all. I’m currently on half term but really struggling with the idea of going back. I feel sick at the thought of it and a deep feeling of dread. I have a racing heart, have gained a stone in half a term and am anxious and exhausted.

Does a period of work for stress/anxiety work? Does it damage your reputation seriously? Can you come back stronger?

I'm so sorry you are feeling this way. Please seek advice from your GP and look after yourself.

As for whether a period of sick leave will fix things, I suppose that depends on the situation and what is causing the stress.

If it is something specific to your workplace, it may not fix it, unless that particular issue is resolved. It may allow you some breathing space to think about your next move though. Having a plan can help.

So, you could think about:

Do you want to try a different school - there are some lovely schools out there.

Or, something else entirely - look at civil service jobs or your local council as a starting point.

Whatever you decide, please look after your own health.
