Applying to go up UPS

Being a bit ignorant on these matters, I was looking for some advice on how UPS works. I have been on UPS1 for five years and read the other day that I might be eligible to apply to go up the pay scale? Could anyone give me some advice about this?

Yes! You could be on UPS3 by now. Have you had regular appraisals? You should be talking about pay progression in these each year. In my school (most schools) you would have missed the boat to go up to UPS2 this year, but definitely speak to your line manager or head teacher about going up the pay scale next year. For UPS it’s normally 2 years of successful appraisals you need, plus showing your wider contribution to the school.

Thank you very much! I do have performance management meetings each year, but pay has never come up. I shall take your helpful advice and speak to my boss

My understanding was you apply to go through to UPS but then you should go up automatically every 2 years if you have a successful appraisal just like you did annually on main scale. I'd definitely ask about it for this appraisal cycle just gone as it seems a mistake on your school's part - I hate to say it OP but you must be several thousand pounds down over the past 3 years (given you'd have been on UPS1 for two years anyway).
