Resigning before starting

I’m due to start a teaching post in January but having visited the school recently I’ve realised I’ve made a massive mistake. I’m sure I don’t want to work there, but where do I stand about resigning before I start? I’ve signed the contract-so will I have to go in in Jan? I’m sick with anxiety about the whole situation

I would come clean with them now that you've visited the school and you've realised you're not a good match because there might have been someone at interview who could start in January.

Perhaps you can try working there for a term and then give your notice in the spring?
It is awful to realise this and I totally understand how you feel

Let the school know asap - I am a Headteacher myself and I would appreciate the notice because it gives time to get someone in place to start for January.
has your current school accepted to retract your resignation though - you don’t want to end up without a job.

I think if you are absolutely sure you don't want to work there, I would contact the head ASAP. Be courteous and explain as nicely as possible that, having visited, you have realised that you are not the right fit for the school.

At least then, they can make plans for January.

Technically, I think you’re too late to resign. The deadline was 31 October. I’d contact head asap and discuss it with them.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 26/11/2023 10:48

I think if you have an honest conversation with the head it's very likely they would let you out of the contract. You'd only be looking to leave straight away, so they're better off trying to recruit someone who does want to be there.

Will your current school allow you to stay?
