Do any of you have recommendations for getting started with online tutoring? There are so many agencies out there, but I have lots of experience and don’t really want the ones that take on students mostly.

Are you on Facebook as there are a few really helpful groups on there for tutoring. Twinkl private tutors is especially useful. I tutor but am face to face so can't help so much re online tutoring, but there'll be lots of people on there who will help.

Hi, can you tell me how much you charge for an hour face to face and also whether I can make a decent living from it? Thanks

Great suggestion about Facebook, thanks.

I charge £40 for 50 mins and see 18 children a week - I'm Primary. It's so rewarding teaching one to one, I specialise in early reading and phonics and early maths skills and most of my pupils struggle at school and it's so nice going at their pace and seeing their confidence grow.

I'd say I earn two thirds of my full time ups teacher salary, and I do about two thirds of the hours, including my prep and admin and some school holiday tutoring. It has worked out really well for me, I'd been full time in school for 25 years and was ready for a change of pace. I tutor after school and do a couple of hours on Sat mornings - there is daytime work around, working with children who are out of school or online with international pupils, but I haven't tried either yet

There's another great tutoring group on Facebook, something like grow your tutoring business to full time, if you put Richard Cowell (who runs it) into Facebook it should come up. Plus Exit the classroom and thrive group has some helpful videos about starting up tutoring by Sharon someone (Sharon Crawley perhaps?).

We wanted face to face tutoring, so for DD's current tutor (she's had 3 over the years) we asked on facebook for a local recommendation.

Yes I found most of my initial families through sharing posts from my Facebook business page to local residents/ mums groups. I also have a Google maps listing. Many come via word of mouth recommendation now.

Zebra2024 · 19/10/2023 12:35

Wow that sounds absolutely brilliant. I just need to make the jump and actually do it!

HippoStraw · 20/10/2023 06:13

Thanks for the advice, I’ll take a look.

Childcare.co.uk is useful for finding initial families though you may need to subscribe to access more families. Some are still looking for online though other families will now request face to face
