TLR - help please!

I need some help with knowing if my TLR is correct.

I have been an Early Years lead and class teacher, managing a nursery and Reception for 3 years. There are 10 people in my team. I also have a subject. I have always had TLR2 but I am at the bottom of that (last year it was around £2,800).

Would you say I am receiving the correct amount? I’m nervous about bringing it up with my head teacher- especially with school budgets being so low.

Thanks!

No TLR for that in my school.

PumpkinPie2016 · 31/08/2023 18:26

For managing early years, I would expect more than that - I'd ask about moving up the tlr scale! But, I am secondary so may be I am not correct.

Have a look around at what other early years leads are getting in your area - may help strengthen your case if they are getting more.

I get more than that for managing a team of 3 for a single subject. I think they are taking the piss.

There is no set amount. Some EY leads get no TLR, especially in smaller schools. How many classes are you managing? In 4-form schools here the EY lead gets middle of the TLR2 band, about £4.7 or £4.8k I think.

Msgiggles30 · 31/08/2023 22:23

I get middle TLR 2 about 5k but I lead Nursery - year 2. I am in Wales EY lead on its own doesn't seem to be a thing here but whole phase leaders generally get a middle 2. Feel like Subject leadership is not really related I led literacy, pse and rse before becoming phase lead and noone gets tlr for that in my area x

If this was secondary, managing that number of people, you’d most likely have a higher TLR. But I think in primaries TLRs are often not given, which is absolutely wrong, but you may find it difficult to argue for more. It’s probably location dependent, so it will be easier to get an increase if you’re in an area where schools are struggling to recruit. I’d keep a record of local job adverts to see what other schools are offering, then if others are offering higher TLRs for similar roles, you can take that to the Head.

I get that for managing one person in secondary. As others have said TLRs in primary are woeful. I think it's worthy of strike action tbh; I'm horrified when I hear what primary teachers take on for no money.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 02/09/2023 12:48

If you're managing 10 staff, then I'd consider that a "large team" which should be a TLR 1.

If you've got a union rep in your school, see if they will help you argue your case, but you definitely should be getting more!

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts, I will bring it up in my appraisal. :)

There are no TLRs for anything in my school-subject, phase or SEND!

Glad it's not just me!

But who does these? I'm the only one in my school with the SENCO award and if they want me to do the role, they need to pay me. I simply wouldn't do it otherwise. If I don't do it, that's a far greater problem to the school than to me.

Yourebeingtooloud · 06/09/2023 23:18

In primary I’ve never known anyone at more than the bare minimum tlr. Secondary is a whole different ball game.

ValancyRedfern · 21/09/2023 17:18

Is the NEU or NAS doing anything about the responsibility level expected of primary teachers without a tlr? It's absolutely outrageous.

They should, but I'm not aware they are.
