Why no shorts?

Hi,

Teacher here but my setting is VERY different! So I can't answer my friend's q here.

Her son goes to a large middle school. (Y5-y8.)

It's part of a MAT.

What would the reasoning behind allowing the girls to wear skirts but not allowing the boys to wear shorts?

From my pov I also wonder if some girls would want to wear shorts too.

Also - in what order would you attempt to tackle it to make a change?

We don't allow shorts because the person in charge of pastoral thinks that it would mean two uniforms for the boys' parents to buy.
actually the person in charge of pastoral just doesn't like the idea

tackytriceratops · 13/06/2023 17:35

Well the person in charge of the MAT appears to make parents buy a heck of a lot of branded uniform; obviously the gov has forced their hand from sept but still more items than most.

The girls' parents obviously can/ have to buy more varieties of clothing so I don't get that logic.

Apologies for the double 'here' in the op. #ohforaneditbutton

We don’t have them because our uniform supplier only does them in Primary school sizes.

tackytriceratops · 13/06/2023 17:45

Trousers/ skirts etc are the only part of the uniform than can be from somewhere else I believe. Which is one of the reasons they're querying why shorts can't be included.

My own school is jumpers can be branded or not, teeshirts a specified colour branded or not and then below just has to be a specific colour (black.)

pure sexism and it does really annoy me when you see female staff in cooking dresses and bare legs and sandals and I'm in a shirt and tie! Lots of male staff still wear the tie despite the hot weather l. In weather like this I refuse! It is obviously completely unfair on boys not to be able to wear shorts and the oh they can wear a skirt just doesn't cut it!!!!!!!!!

NEmama · 13/06/2023 21:20

I know a school who is banning skirts next school year!

tackytriceratops · 14/06/2023 06:51

It is sexism.

Her boy and his friends charge about all lunchtime playing football and over heating, though it's so hot they're doing so anyway.

@NEmama is that in the NE? This is in the NE. And that ridiculous. There was a report about the importance for girls for wearing skirts

@tackytriceratops yes

tackytriceratops · 14/06/2023 08:25

Is it by any chance the gosforth group?

No

We do allow shorts but I have only ever seen a couple of boys in Year 7 wearing them.

We don’t have them because our uniform supplier only does them in Primary school sizes.

But what size is that up to, would have to be a 12 or 14 surely to cover all of primary? Couldn't they just wear them until outgrown then wear trousers ?

tackytriceratops · 02/07/2023 04:57

This was apparently reversed after many emails from parents and many staff not being able to understand it either.

Only during the second half of summer term 🙄
