Interview - what are they looking for?

Esp in the observation. I feel like I’ve prepped so much for the interview but I’m worried about getting the observation all wrong!

It is 30 mins in year 5. I am doing modal verbs. But making it more fun by linking to the topic etc.

I just wonder if anyone has experience of what SLT look for when they’re observing a candidate? Are you looking for the perfect lesson or is it more about personality and how you engage with the children in this part?

Oh interviews are so stressful 😅😂 and I really want this job 🤞

I can't speak for everyone but when I am observing a lesson I am looking at:

  • subject knowledge (any red flags?)
  • how confident and comfortable in the classroom
  • how they respond to the students/their tone/their behaviour management techniques
  • is their planning logical and engaging (I love it when interviewees print out a lesson plan and their resources- and some even create a plan of what a full lesson would look like even if only teaching 30 mins).

But basically, that 30 minutes is a tiny amount of time to judge what someone is really like as a teacher, and you don't know the kids so progress won't be a clear snapshot of how you normally perform as a teacher, but it is if you are attempting to get that progress with positive learning atmosphere, using names, considering any needs, logical and engaging planning, questionnings/afl, recognising when things are working and adapting etc.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I’ve done a written lesson plan (wouldn’t normally but thought it’d be good for this purpose).

Will update you on how it goes. Xx
