What is the difference between forward and backward lesson planning?

I am a newly qualified teacher and I would appreciate if someone could explain to me what forward and backward planning is in terms of lesson planning.

Eh? Absolutely no idea and I’ve been teaching for almost 20 years! It’s probably something we’ve all been doing for years that has been given a new name.
It annoys me so much that messages come from above about routines and consistency for students when they are constantly changing expectations of teachers.
We had to sit through a staff meeting recently where we were told that we should be putting kids names on lolly sticks and cold calling as if it was something new. I say through the exact same lecture in 2004!
Could backward planning be when you decide what you want them to know and then plan how they will get there? Basically what teachers have to do each lesson. No idea really, this will probably be a future staff meeting! 🤷‍♀️😂

From googling, it seems that forward planning is starting with an activity and developing lesson objectives from it and backward planning is starting with the objective and developing the activity to match- so basically what everyone does anyway!

Have a Google of the book'Understanding by Design' by Wiggins and McTighe. It's about using a backwards design model.
