Is it common for schools to ask for a Pre-employment health check from occupational health?
Do many schools do this?
Have you personally done a pre-employment health check from occupational health before being offered a job in a school?

Perfectly normal

Most schools do this, nothing to worry about.

Yes. I also had to do a health form when I signed up to do teacher training.

Btw, it may be reassuring to know there are no barred conditions as such, it's about how the conditions will impact you and the support you need.

It's very rare for these to result in outright refusal of employment although in some cases it can happen. I do have a bit of experience of this so if you have concerns please feel free to message me if you don't want to share publicly.

Every school I've worked in (many) requests these. Very normal.

What happens during these pre-employment health checks?

From what I remember, it’s a questionnaire, then a follow up phone call if they need more info.

Why are you asking? Have you been asked to do one?

I want to apply for a job in a high school. And the application form states that you need a pre-employment health check.

That's perfectly normal

OutDamnedSpot · 11/02/2023 19:13

Totally normal. Try not to worry about it.

Do you have a condition you’re worried about declaring? Generally, so long as you declare it, it’s not a problem (they’ll just check how it’s managed). I suspect if you didnt declare, it might leave you vulnerable later.

In case this helps you - I had declared mental health problems. Got a call from occupational health - I discussed what treatment I’d had, what I’d learned from therapy and what I now do differently. They were absolutely fine about it.
