Is it normal to start at a new school without any induction/guidance? And thrown in the deep end - also leading an area fairly new to me from an SLT point of view - and and left to it?

I’m trying survive in a new school in a tough situation.

No induction, no CPD, no regular catch-up meetings with the head, totally in the deep end and on my own in role. When I have questions, want to know more details about a child/protocol/scenario etc I'm told to look it up and am dismissed.

I find this hard to grasp as at my previous school support for new staff was great and everyone got a full induction no matter the level of seniority. Even the new head of school did from the exec head, with regular meetings until they were settled in.

I'm all for putting my big girl pants on and sucking it up, but this surely isn't right? Have I been spoiled in my previous 2 schools?!

I'm not young and naive either; 18 years in the job and 11 of those as SLT.

Thanks

I'm in charge of new staff. You'd get much more than that from me!

tfh · 22/01/2023 18:27

This doesn't sound right at all! Can you book in a meeting with your head and ask for some more support? Is there someone else on SLT who can work with you on some of these things?

HedyPrism · 22/01/2023 18:29

That sounds awful. I'd be moving again if you can!

mashbanana · 22/01/2023 19:02

Thank you. It really is awful and I'm already dreading tomorrow. I feel like I've transformed from a confident, experienced, member of staff to a quivering wreck.
I barely recognise myself at the moment & am hanging on by a thread. The SLT are very clicky, and have worked together for a long time. The exec head, whist very good in many way, is also good friends with them. There would a lot of eye rolling and belittling I suspect. I feel like I've been set up to fail from day one,

Sadly it will not get any better. Cliques are dangerous. Are your Union of any use?
