TA side conversation

I have just started a new job and have 2 TAs in my room who are very opposed to any different. The just harp on about how the last teacher did things and are passive aggressive about my teaching rolling their eyes and folding their arms. My biggest issue is the side talking when I'm teaching. The children are really little and I have a limited time for instruction before I lose them. And yet for those precious times the TAs talk very loudly about absolutely inane crap. I have tried stopping and waiting but to no avail. I don't want to be rude despite their rudeness in talking over me, but I do need to make them aware that this is really unhelpful. I've worked with loads of TAs in the past but this is the first time I've experienced such a disrespectful environment. Any suggestions?

Can you direct them to things to do while you are teaching? One preparing some materials, one sitting with a specific pupil to help them focus.

You have my deepest sympathy - I have had TAs like this, it is a nightmare, nothing for it but plain talking to them, I am afraid

When I’ve had this before I just direct them - ‘everybody quiet…grown ups too…ms x please sit with y and Mrs z over there with a. Thank you’

perfectly polite & done with a smile but not wasting any time.
