Hi has anyone else who works in schools been told schools could be closed Monday due to the heat wave?

I work in a secondary school and had a little warning about it today.
Also a friend has been told by her child's nursery it could be closed Monday.

I work in a primary (part of a MAT) and no hint of us closing at all ….. last day for pupils is next Wednesday.

Well I spoke to the nursery staff where my kids go and they've said they've not heard anything.

Wondering if it's just rumours going around at the moment.

I think it’s just rumours. Attendance is pretty poor though. A lot of students off sick with headaches and heat stroke today!

We were told school might be shut Monday and Tuesday - we're an upper school in old buildings with very few classrooms airconditioned. I think we'd set online learning though.

WayDownInTheHole · 14/07/2022 22:40

We're expecting to be closed Mon/Tue, though nothing confirmed yet.

Wonder if it does happen then! Also when will we find out??

My primary school is moving to remote learning for Monday and Tuesday (Surrey). But neither dd1's secondary school nor dd2's junior school are closing (London borough). They have said PE kit can be worn though.

Those of us who work in the school office actually check our emails even at weekends. When “things” may happen we check VERY regularly and if there is any instruction to do anything then we can send texts / emails to all parents as soon as the head tells us to wherever we are (so long as we have internet 😊).

I very much doubt we will be receiving guidance to do anything other than what we are already doing.

We've been told ot's open as normal. I am expecting to faint. My classroom has no air con, gets the sun all day and is usually 3-5 degrees hotter than outside.

It reached 33 degrees inside last week when it was 29 outside and that was impossible. I stopped teaching and we went and sat under a tree. But that won't be great on monday or tuesday, still too hot. I want to cancel the leavers performance but have been told no. It will be awful.

loopshot · 15/07/2022 21:27

One of our rooms with no air con reached 33 last week when it was about 25 outside. Dreading what it will be like Monday/Tuesday

It's bonkers that there is a minimum temperature that classrooms must not fall below in the case of extremely cold weather for schools to close, but there is no maximum temperature for when it gets too hot to function 🤨

Philandbill · 16/07/2022 09:05

We're open. I don't think that the classroom will be much worse than the flats a good proportion of my class live in and I'll do all I can to keep the children hydrated. I'm actually more concerned about their journey home as we're a special school and most of the children come in on mini buses with no or ineffective air conditioning. And as the buses are on set routes dropping off children they can be on the bus for an hour.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/07/2022 12:55

No, seems it's business as usual at ours. Despite the school being like a greenhouse and some rooms having no openable windows!

I had to send one of my team home last week as she was sick mid lesson due to the heat in a room😲
