Becoming an HLTA

I have been a teaching assistant at a private school for a couple of years now and would like to progress to becoming an HLTA. I'm just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how to do this and any experience?
There seems to be different ways to do this. I have spoken to some other HLTAs at my school, and they were just allowed to become an HLTA without any extra training. I'm not sure if this is still allowed these days, as the other option is to pay appx. £500 for an online course. Has anyone managed to get their school to pay for this? And was the course relatively easy to complete? Well, i'm not expecting it to be easy, but at least manageable. I did start a PGCE a few years ago but simply couldn't cope with the stress of it all (I had some mental health issues at the time which also didn't help). I do have a university degree if this helps.
I am hoping to speak to the head soon about this, so want to make sure i'm prepared. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Alexa
