Help: Observation

I’m a secondary school teacher but I also go into feeder primaries. I’ve just been told I’m being observed in one of the primary schools as part of the observation cycle.

Is this allowed??

I work in an independent across the prep and senior school (different sites but closely linked) and am observed in both, but I think that’s different to your situation. I honestly think it’s a question for your union rep. Would it be a feeder school staff member observing or someone from senior? What proportion of your timetable is in feeder schools? I am observed independently by each school and officially managed by the Hod of my subject in seniors but I have complete freedoms in the prep re: curriculum etc.

By whom? For what purpose?

I said that the students behaviour was difficult and I was asking for support i.e. for the classroom teacher to stay in with me. I only see them half an hour each week so it’s hard to build relationships.

The teacher changes the seating plan every week so I don’t even know all their names.

I feel a bit of face-saving is happening here - probably shouldn’t have mentioned it, now I feel that I’m being punished. The teacher can’t always control the class in my opinion.

Oh, a member of SLT from my school will be observing me and I have a feeling that the primary head will be there.

Observing you should not be the response to your request. Can you go back and say yes great but FIRST

  1. You would like to observe the classroom teacher so you can see how the class is managed usually.
  2. You need a seating plan for the class.
  3. You would like the classroom teacher to stay for the next two weeks.
