Is anyone else marking exams this year? How are you finding the support offered by your board?

I think it is shocking they don't pay for seeds. That is in effect their quality control system - and they are getting it for free.

The exam boards must be saving a fortune with no face to face meetings, no postage costs, no travel expenses etc to pay. I will not be doing it again.

Tralala33 · 07/07/2022 15:48

I get paid for seeds. I thought the pay was taxed at 20% as it's a second job.

LifeInsideMyhead · 07/07/2022 16:17

Yup definitely not paid for seeds here - There's a breakdown in the payslip per Q and I can see its my allocation minus around 10%. I am genuinely surprised that varies within the exam board between subjects (I know other boards do things differently!) I believe the rationale is that its built into the script fee.🙄

As for tax, yes if you have reached the tax threshold on your first job obviously you need to pay tax at whatever rate you are at. There isnt a "second job" rate. As I've had a low earning year I will need the tax back - I'm not sure if it's the exam board or hmrc to contact.

itrytomakemyway · 07/07/2022 16:40

I have been underpaid by at least 20% - surely 20% of the questions could not have been seeds?

LifeInsideMyhead · 07/07/2022 17:21

Mine is more like 10%. I wonder if it's paid up to a certain date - as in whether it hasn't counted some recent marking?

I'd email your team leader maybe?

JaffavsCookie · 07/07/2022 22:23

Amazed it varies by subject, in mine you dont get paid for seeds, and the number of seeds varies, not least depending on your performance, eg if you failed 2/10 of the random seeds the system will throw more seeds in. In addition the first five of any question are seeds, so you don’t get paid for those, and you have to redo that if you mark one question over more than one day ( eg i have just stopped for the night as really cannot face another 150 of question x), so i need to re qualify tomorrow to finish it off. You are also have to redo 5 if you get stopped. So 20 % would be super high but it could be nearly possible

JaffavsCookie · 07/07/2022 22:26

Your team leader will not know about pay. ( i am TL on 2 papers) i know how much my team have marked ( well as recently as last report which may be a couple of days old) but i have no idea about how much they have been paid/ are owed

Phineyj · 10/07/2022 20:23

I got a generic letter from AQA to my school asking for markers a few months ago. I'm afraid my colleague and I wrote across it 'you do not pay enough for this work' (we teach Econ A-level, including a module on the labour market, so find their cheapskating particularly irksome...we could do a nice diagrammatic analysis of it though, I suppose).

I calculated I spent 40 hours on it last time, including unpaid child protection training, e-safety training, self training on their two incompatible computer packages and qualification scripts.

It came to minimum wage once the unpaid hours were included.

Windflower92 · 11/07/2022 21:26

Hi all, I have a quick question. I've just hit my 70% first pay quota and have submitted the batch..do I have to do anything to get the pay or is it automatic? And how long do I have to wait? 😁

cherrypiepie · 11/07/2022 21:58

Yes automatic at 70% then weekly catch up runs there after.

cherrypiepie · 11/07/2022 21:58

Into M payroll runs Thursday and pay is Friday? I'm 66 right now! 8 more for my pay!

Windflower92 · 11/07/2022 23:18

So does that mean I should have my pay already @cherrypiepie? Does it not take a few days to process?

cherrypiepie · 12/07/2022 22:12

I think this Friday15 June . So you hit 70% Sunday, next payroll run is Thursday and pay on Friday

There have been problems this year but I think they have been sorted.

TheZeppo · 14/07/2022 21:34

Not sorted if you are Lit 1M.

Im a TL and dealing with several (rightly!) cross AES.

As an aside- do you stay in the people’s pension for marking? I’ve always opted out but wondering if that’s the right decision. In TPS (15 years) and no plans to jump ship. What do you guys do? I’m 40, if that matters.

itrytomakemyway · 14/07/2022 21:56

I have double checked, and the pay I have had is all I am getting. It is far below what I was expecting to get. What I think about all of the unpaid hours of work I did - the online training, marking the sample scripts, all those seeds - I am not at all happy.

I am not going to mark for AQA again.

LifeInsideMyhead · 14/07/2022 22:28

I dont want to add up all the unpaid stuff... Im going to go for it next year though as my theory is it will be quicker having done it this year!

Re my paid tax. It all got sorted by magic! Hmrc emailed to say my tax code had changed and I can see tomorrow Im being paid the tax back from AQA a week later! Makes it more worthwhile in my case!

Windflower92 · 14/07/2022 23:19

How is everyone seeing what they're getting paid? I'm just seeing no payslips available 😫

TheZeppo · 14/07/2022 23:36

@Windflower92 have you looked on itrent? It’s a bit hit and miss, but if you’re being paid this Friday it should be up.

Windflower92 · 15/07/2022 06:55

I didn't get paid @TheZeppo, how annoying! Not sure why as I hit 70 on Tuesday.

TheZeppo · 15/07/2022 06:58

There are a few papers that they are having issues with- def Lit 1M, think history might be another? Very frustrating for everyone!

LifeInsideMyhead · 15/07/2022 07:07

I can see on my banking app items "pending" to go through the next day. So i can see the day before I am paid how much it will be!

ToadiesCouzin · 15/07/2022 16:58

Has anyone who has been marking got their payment for 70% when they expected it (i.e. a few days after hitting that). I hit that on Wednesday I think, I'm wondering when I'll get paid. I didn't get paid today (and there's no payslip showing yet on iTrent), so does that mean the earliest I can expect it is next Friday? Also, how do you opt out of the pension?

TheZeppo · 15/07/2022 18:21

Earliest will be next Friday.

if I recall correctly (it’s been a few years!) you’ll get a letter through from the people’s pension soonish. You can use the details on the letter to withdraw.

ToadiesCouzin · 15/07/2022 18:56

Oh that's good, thank you. I know nothing of the "People's Pension", so I have no idea how good it is. Is anyone staying in it because they think it's worth it?

Smokealarmwakeup · 19/07/2022 18:42

I’ve not had a payslip this year yet and have finished my quota and done extra.

It was suggested you mark 20 scripts as practice, alongside standardisation etc, I wish I had kept a record of the hours I had worked to see if it’s above minimum wage.
