How is recruitment at your school currently

We are currently getting more and better quality teaching applications than we have for years , but can't appoint at all into the roles where we have traditionally always had loads of applications, such as TAs, Admin, kitchen staff. We don't get any applications at all for site or IT vacancies.

I've found the same in both my old school and new one... IT in particular have had a lot of turnover within companies (some traditional school IT companies have changed focus or merged) and people just move on jobs faster (something always different to how we view teaching jobs). We have had similar with TAs and admin, people either haven't wanted long term because they think they can get better elsewhere or have just cast a wider net of potential options out there.

I think one issue is that there isn't a pool of mum's wanting school friend hours for "pin money" when DC start school any more. More go back to work when DC are much younger and flexible working must help mothers parents stay in their pre family careers, but I've no idea how we're going to staff our office or canteen!

The money is terrible, but people (OK women) have been prepared to accept that for school hours, but it doesn't seem to be the case any more. We could pay more, but that means less to spend in other areas, just as everything else is getting more expensive too.

Teachers, not so bad. We usually struggle to recruit but have had LOTS of NQTs applying. But we have 4 TA vacancies ( all 1:1s) and had 2 applications!

LisaSimpson77 · 18/05/2022 22:37

The same here, we haven't advertised for teaching staff recently so not sure there, but our adverts for TA and office staff haven't been responded to well at all, it's a real struggle.

Yes this is the case around here too. And the calibre of TA staff being sent by the agencies, has been hitting all time lows. Many can barely speak English, and have little if any experience in schools, and given they are being paid daily rates that are higher than some of the NQTs, it’s becoming a really big bone of disgruntled contention!

Same here. Nigh on impossible to get anyone with any experience for a TA role, and even broadening this to ‘keen, enthusiastic, willing to learn’ type requirements isn’t really helping!
That said, we have recruited some brilliant people, mostly inexperienced but with great skills, over the last few years too.

Have a look at the current, long thread on 'gold dust' school jobs - lots of TAs and admin staff on there answering this very question!

Just realised it was your thread! You got some pretty detailed answers on there - guess you're checking whether other schools are exoeriencing the same. I imagine they are.
