Thought i'd posted this, but cant see it anywhere.

When writing reports (primary school):

  • how long does on report take you?
  • do you get any time out for it or do you have to write them in your own time?

Thanks

We have really streamlined our reports over the past couple of years, without any negative feedback from parents, so that they now take around 10 minutes each. Still a lot when you have 30 to write but much better than it used to be! Staff write them in their own time although we have one staff meeting slot kept " free" as extra time to help!

Thanks. Can ask what your reports include and roughly how many words/charachters per box?
I presume still a maths comment, reading/writing comment, personal comment, improvments and successes?

Does everyone assess in all the foundation subjects?

We assess and write comments for all subjects. 150-200 words for Maths and English; 2-3 sentences for non-core. Then there's a full page for social/emotional/attitudes to learning/teacher's comment/HT comment. I can do a straightforward one in 20 minutes but a trickier customer takes rather longer. We get a TED to complete them (but I try to get them done before then so I can do other things on the TED).

We write c 200 word pen portrait, then colour coded boxes for punctuality, behaviour and effort ( so red, Amber, green, purple) same colour codes for all subjects which equate to working well below, below, at or above ARE, then target sentences for reading, writing and maths. That, together with a print out of attendance ( and statutory information such as yr 6 test results) is it.

10-15 minutes, depending on the student. Takes a long time when there's 30 kids to do!

Cauliflower92 · 14/05/2022 20:24

I was quite proud of myself for getting it down to about 25-30 minutes, give or take depending on the child. I tend to have to look at books or notes and cant just do everything from my head.

10-15 minutes sounds amazing and something I aspire to and would mean i could just do it in two or three evenings. As it is, im doing 2 or 3 a night and seems never ending. Hence i was asking if anyone gets extra time to complete them.

Getting better though and the report format is easier than previous years.

Thanks for your responses.

Mine are awful - over an hour each one.
Personal box, core subjects x 3 and all foundation.

It takes me a full week of the Easter holidays every year plus editing during summer 2!
