Tutee not achieving - I'm not a miracle worker - what would you do?

My tutee for GCSE Science has indicator/target grades of 6. They are doing triple Science and in y10 got 2,3,5 in BCP and in their y11 mocks got 3,3,5. (I have tutored them since Sept) I am only doing Bio and Chem with them. We have 12 weeks til the exams and I feel I need to write to the parents to express my concern. All I seem to do in the sessions is re-teach topics and we don't get to the questions I have prepared as their understanding is so low. So they don't then know how to answer questions. They are doing higher tier. Obviously there is a long way to go here. If they understood the topic, I could then go on to teach them how to answer the questions better and give lots of practice. Their revision is pants as they have very poor recall - I have seen their papers. If I focused on revision technique I wouldn't get any of the other things done.
What would you do in this situation?

Not a teacher.

As a parent of a similar ability child I'd want you to talk to me telling me what you have said here, probably advise that I should talk to the school about whether the 3,3, papers should be foundation not higher.

I would want you to give me options for the sessions, but probably I'd want you to focus on revision methods, and/or doing questions with the CGP revision guide open in front of you so my DC has to find the relevant info as well as formulate answers.

Good advice from @TeenPlusCat. Can you ask the parents to authorise you to consult the teacher(s) for advice on how best to use your sessions? Or the parents could ask for you, if you trust them to relay information accurately.

PS I am suggesting this partly because I think it is sensible, and partly because I think you need to be seen to be linked in to The Accepted Way of Doing Things if it all goes pear shaped. For the latter reason I would also be communicating well with the parents if you aren’t already

Thanks all. I must be on the right track as before I read these responses, I have contacted the school and enquired as above and about foundation paper. I have also written to the parent expressing the concerns and giving several options of how to use the sessions. Thanks
