Hello any former teachers, left teaching for one of the above roles. I am in the process of leaving teaching after five years, would really like to hear from people who have made the transition. I have had a few interviews for the above roles, but it seems my lack of technical skills and absence of a portfolio are letting me down, any suggestions for courses I can take ? Thanks in advanced

Check out the podcast and Instagram page “teacher career coach”. The host and owner interviews teachers that have left and gone into new roles and I think she has a couple of interviews and resources for the roles you’ve mentioned above. I‘ve been following her since the beginning of the year and am retraining in the new year for my first career outside of teaching .

Nice thank you I will do. What are you retraining in? It’s so daunting right, I can’t see myself as anything more than a teacher, but then I also see myself as more than a teacher 😂 I also have guilt about leaving, as I teach Alevel and I may potentially leave one of my groups half way, but then if I wait I will have another group half way through alevel as well, so many thoughts 😅

I decided to do a software engineering/coding boot camp after listening to the podcast and doing my own research. It is totally different to my current role as an English teacher but I’m ready to take the plunge.

I totally get what you mean. I am grieving the life and journey I thought I’d have as a teacher but this profession is just not sustainable for me anymore. I’m leaving next week and feel so guilty particularly for my year 11 class but I honestly can’t stay at my current school anymore because it’s so toxic and it’s time for me to focus on myself. The kids will be fine and they’ll move on with their new teacher.

Another good resource to check out is ‘Life after teaching’ on Facebook. It gives an idea of what former teachers in the UK do now and is a really good support system.

Wishing you all the best! Feel free to message me again if you’d like to chat about anything. I’m starting my journey as a former teacher soon and I nervous, a bit sad but also very excited to see what the next stage is.
